Exposure Therapy for Anxiety: What Is It and How Do You Do It?

Exposure therapy is a type of therapy used to treat anxiety disorders. It involves gradually exposing a person to the source of their fear or anxiety in a safe and controlled environment. The goal of exposure therapy is to help individuals confront their fears and learn to cope with them in a healthy way.

Many people have hang-ups about different things. A lot of people are scared about certain things and so avoid them. It might seem strange but sometimes gradual and limited exposure to the things you most fear can help you overcome them. For example, if you’re scared about walking down the street because you have a fear of dog poo, your therapist might suggest that he will take a short walk down the street alongside you where you can experience what it’s like to ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’. This exposure to the thing you fear can feel enormously empowering and liberating when you challenge your fear together with your therapist. Little by little it can help you overcome your biggest fears.

How to do exposure therapy for anxiety?

Exposure therapy for anxiety involves gradually and safely exposing yourself to the things you fear most, allowing you to learn that you can handle these situations and decrease your anxiety over time.

Little by little with your therapist safely alongside you, you will begin to gently do the things you are afraid of. I call this ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’. So, if you have a fear of going outside your therapist might suggest going for a short walk outside together with you and you feeling what it’s like to survive the experience. Little by little this process can make you feel empowered, stronger and less afraid.
